Stage 1

This is light state of sleep when you begin to fall asleep. Also known as the Non-Rapid Eye Movement phase, the light sleep stage is when you start floating and your minds drifts. If there’s a sudden noise you can wake very easily during this stage.

Stage 2

The Stage 2 phase of sleep is also a light sleep stage. It’s when your heart rate slows, and your body temperature drops. Your eye movement also stops, and your brain waves slow down. Almost 50 per cent of your sleep happens in this phase of sleep.

Stage 3

Stage 3 is a much deeper sleep stage when your breathing deepens. It’s during this time that your body begins to regenerate itself andyour immune system strengthens. Stage 3 sleep is vital to your health and wellbeing and you will feel disorientated if woken during this sleep phase.

Stage 4

Stage 4 is the deepest stage of sleep, also known as the Rapid Eye Movement phase. This is when most of your dreaming occurs. During Rapid Eye Movement, your body does not regulate its temperature, so you can wake up feeling hot or cold.
