Learn how to properly use a mattress topper on a memory foam mattress

"

A beautiful bedroom and a cosy mattress, who doesn’t like to sleep on it? But mattresses can get old and look dull after an extended period. Most mattresses have a life span of 10 to 20 years. While replacing them is the easier option, memory foam mattresses are also quite expensive.

While they may look dull, some mattresses still have life in them. If you want to continue using your mattress after they are worn out, using a mattress topper is an excellent option. What are mattress toppers, and how do they work? Read on to find out everything about this wonderful accessory and make the right choice for your bedroom!

What is a mattress topper?

A mattress topper, as the name suggests, is placed on top of a memory foam mattress. It is a cushioned layer that can modify the firmness and look of your old mattress.

Just like the mattress, toppers are also available in different materials and colours. The feel, firmness, and comfort levels of toppers vary depending on the cushioning and material. They are not simply top covers that are only for aesthetics.

While choosing a mattress topper, it is essential to keep in mind your personal preference. Do you like your mattress firm or soft? Do you want additional support? Is there any medical condition that requires you to sleep on a certain type of mattress or consider different types of mattresses?

Mattress toppers don’t entirely change the way your mattress feels, but they affect the firmness and temperature drastically. At best, it is like a thinner, lighter mattress on top of your original one.

What is the point of a mattress topper?

While mattress toppers are the go-to choice for old mattresses, many people are still confused over their purpose. Most mattress toppers are designed to increase the comfort level of the main mattress. They are made of polyurethane material, which is available in different thicknesses and densities. Additionally, many modifications such as cool gel technology are available to counter problems that come with traditional toppers. Other than comfort, mattress toppers have several benefits such as:

Too-firm mattress transformation

Most hard mattresses get softer over time. But it can be uncomfortable to sleep on them in the initial days. Moreover, if you bought a mattress that is too hard for you, replacing it can be expensive. Using a mattress topper is one of the quickest ways to soften a hard mattress.

While it doesn’t reduce the firmness, it adds a soft layer which provides the required support to your pressure points. It also lets your body sink just enough to accommodate them and maintain the natural contours of your body.

If you wake up with body pain or feel extra pressure on your hips and back, then getting a mattress topper can help you relieve the pain.

Fix a worn mattress

Mattresses have a life span of 10 to 20 years. If your mattress has reached its end, but you don’t want to replace it with a new one, then using a mattress topper can fix your problem. Worn-out mattresses not only reduce the appeal of your bedroom but also compromise your posture when you sleep.

Mattress toppers are available in a variety of styles and colours. A suitable topper can add a few years to your old mattress and provide a uniform layer of comfort above the sagging layers of the older one. While very old mattresses can’t be salvaged through this method, lightly worn-out mattresses can be saved. It covers the lumps and uneven surface of the old mattress, giving it a new look and feel.

Add skeletal support

If you wake up every day with sore muscles or back pain, your mattress might be the problem. Our mattresses are designed to provide adequate support to our bodies as we sleep. But not all mattresses are suitable for everyone. The type of bedding we should sleep on depends on our sleeping style and medical requirements. Back sleepers do well on a firm mattress, but side and stomach sleepers may need something a little softer.

While you can’t alter the firmness of your mattress, you can add a layer to provide the required support to your spine. Mattress toppers of different softness accommodate your body’s contours and help you maintain the right posture even in your sleep. No more sore muscles or back pain the next time you wake up!

Your mattress will be cleaner

If you like your bedroom spick and span, you must know that cleaning the mattress is a task in itself. Using mattress toppers will help you keep the mattress clean by providing an additional dust-proof layer. As these toppers are removable and light, cleaning them is also easier. Whether it is dust, perspiration, or moisture, a high-quality mattress topper acts as a saviour for your mattress!

Your bed will be cooler

While memory foam mattresses are great for support, they are notorious for trapping heat and making the bed warm. When we sleep on a memory foam mattress, it can make us feel warm and sticky. Gel-infused mattresses keep us cool, but they can be quite expensive as well.

A more economical option is to buy a cool gel-infused mattress topper. Place it on top of a memory foam mattress, and you will get the best of both worlds. The memory foam will support your body’s posture and relieve your pressure points, while the gel topper will absorb body heat and keep you cool. Moreover, mattress toppers are much cheaper than buying an entire gel mattress.

Traditional mattress toppers made of polyurethane foam also trapped heat and made the mattress warm. But recent toppers are made of better materials that cool the bed without trapping body heat.

If you don’t like gel toppers, you can also use mattress toppers made of wool. It absorbs moisture and prevents you from feeling humid and sticky. Other natural materials such as bamboo knit mattress toppers also absorb humidity and help maintain a cool temperature.

How to use a mattress topper?

Using a mattress topper for the first time can be confusing. Improper placement of mattress toppers can make sleeping uncomfortable, and your mattress might end up looking worse than before.

The first step to using a mattress topper is to choose the right one for you. Toppers are available in a variety of materials and thicknesses. Based on material, you can choose from latex, memory foam, bamboo knit, and even wool. While original toppers were made of polyester blends, they have evolved to create toppers out of more comfortable materials. The right mattress topper will support your body’s natural curves and also provide relief from any back and hip pain.

After you choose the right topper, you can move on to installing it on the mattress. Follow the below steps to ensure a hassle-free instalment.

Open the mattress topper

Mattress toppers are packed in a compressed form. After you buy a topper, you need to take it out of the package carefully. Avoid using any sharp objects and try to open the package using your hands. If you have to use a knife or a pair of scissors, be careful not to cut it too deep. The mattress topper can get damaged if the knife accidentally cuts through it.

After you open the package, take the topper out of it and spread it out. The topper will need space to expand, so keep it flat on the floor in a spacious area. If any instruction manual is included, keep it for later reference.

Fluff it and air it out

Once the topper is out, it will start taking in air and expanding. Depending on the size and thickness of the topper, it may take a few hours to a day to expand to its original shape. While the centre of the topper expands quickly, the corners take some time. Before using the mattress topper, make sure that it is expanded fully, even at the corners.

Compressed latex and memory foam toppers have a distinctly strong smell. As the topper expands, you will notice that the smell is more pleasant and bearable. If the topper still smells after it has expanded, it is better to air it out for some more time.

Align the mattress topper with the mattress

Before placing the topper on the mattress, you need to remove all the sheets and pillow on top of it. Even if the mattress has a protection cover, you need to remove it before placing the topper.

Next, you need to examine the mattress to see if there are any noticeable lumps and pits. Placing a topper on an uneven surface can cause it to sink when you sleep on it. If your mattress has too many lumps, you can place a cardboard sheet to even out the surface.

If the pits are too big, you can also place small pillows or fill the pits using some memory foam. The aim is to create an even surface to place the topper. A mattress topper adds a layer of softness to the bed, but it cannot hold its shape as it is much lighter.

Once the surface is examined, keep the topper on top of the mattress. Position it so that it covers all the centre of the mattress. The right-sized topper should completely cover the mattress, but even if it is a size small, your priority should be to place it in the centre.

Depending on the type of topper, it may come with or without straps to attach it to the bed. If it comes with elastic straps, align the topper with the edges of the mattress. Then pull the straps over the mattress to fix it in place. Even if the topper doesn’t have attached straps, you can use detachable ones to prevent the topper from moving.

Cover the mattress and mattress topper

After you place the topper, you can place anything on top of it like you would on a normal mattress. First, cover it with a mattress protector. Even though the topper offers an additional layer of protection, it is always good to place the mattress protector above it. This prevents any moisture and bacteria from getting absorbed in your mattress. After that, you can cover the bed using bed sheets and duvets and place pillows on them.
